"Ku'u 'Aina Aloha" (My beloved land)… My mana'o (thoughts), slack key, and passion through music. Kawika's desire is to continue to perpetuate ki ho'alu (slack key guitar style), Hawaiian music, and aloha for our 'aina through his music. Kuʻu ʻAina Aloha is a mix of four original songs, three others for which he composed the music, and five cover songs, Kahiapo’s devotion to and love of Hawaiʻi and its people, land, waters, and culture are evident in his lyrics; his velvety voice painting a picture in English and Hawaiian of both his home and his passions. Kuʻu ʻAina Aloha was produced by Kahiapo. Chris Lau of Rhythm and Roots co-produced and engineered the album. Guest artists include: Chris Lau (bass); Nick Olds (percussion); Greg Sardinha (steel guitar); and LT Smooth (guitar). In addition to vocals, Kahiapo plays guitar, ʻukulele, cuatro, bass,

and percussion. One of the album’s original songs, “Waimanalo,” composed about the place Kawika calls home, was performed on “Let’s Play Music! Music by Kawika Lamalama Ke Kukui (Welcoming Chant of Enlightenment) Na ‘Anakala ‘Iokepa De Santos, Lä 20 o Kēkēmapa M.H. 2006 Mālama ‘Āina This chant may be used to welcome ‘ohana and guests, or may be used to announce your arrival; sharing the enlightenment brought forth by Ke Akua. Nā kai ‘ewalu in the first verse is a poetic way to identify Hawai‘i, referring to the eight channels that are woven around the islands. In the second verse, kahe wai (flowing water) is symbolic of God’s love for us, as He showers us with His many blessings. The fourth verse identifies the arduous work and commitment in maintaining lōkahi while caring for the ‘āina and the kai, which both provide nourishment to all. These are the attributes of Mālama ‘Āina. The kualono (summit) in this verse symbolizes challenges and obstacles that are overcome in order to accomplish and maintain this delicate balance in nature, in which our ancestors believed that for every living being born to the ocean, so was a guardian was born on land. "Ho'omaluhia" To make a place of peace and tranquility....(through music) Hoʻomaluhia is primarily an instrumental slack key album and features seven original and five cover songs, including the instrumental version of Jack Johnson’s award-winning song “Constellations,” from Johnson’s double platinum “In Between Dreams” album. Johnson plays alongside Kahiapo on this track. Also on the album is “Moe’s Lullabye,” a song Kahiapo wrote for Johnson’s son, Moe. The one song with vocals is Kahiapo’s take on a cover of the classic “Koke’e” by his friend the late Dennis Kamakahi. Hoʻomaluhia was produced by Kahiapo and recorded over a period of ten years, beginning at the same time he was in the studio
