Currently living in Waimanalo, Kawika grew up in Kane`ohe, developing his interest in music at a very early age thanks to his father's influence. He recalls some of his fondest memories back in the 80's; Kani ka pila or jam sessions with his childhood friends, and Gabby "Pops" Pahinui showing up with a guitar and bottle of vodka. Moments like these would lay the framework for Kawika's lifelong passion for ki ho`alu or Hawaiian slack key. His guitar mastery has garnered consistent recognition by the Hawaiian Academy of Recording arts, earning legendary status as a Native Hawaiian Performing Artist.
